Conflict Intensifies in DR Congo as M23 Rebels Advance on Goma

The decades-long conflict in eastern DR Congo has escalated as the M23 rebel group, led by ethnic Tutsis, advances on the strategic city of Goma near the Rwandan border. The group accuses the government of failing to honor peace agreements, while facing accusations of support from Rwanda.

Rwanda justifies its involvement, citing threats from Hutu militias and blaming DR Congo for backing these groups during 1994 genocide, a claim the Congolese government denies.

UN peacekeepers and forces from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are struggling to contain the violence amid rising civilian casualties and military losses.
