French Authorities Regain Control of New Caledonia's Capital After Two Weeks of Unrest

French authorities have regained full control of New Caledonia's capital, Noumea, following two weeks of unrest that resulted in seven deaths and significant destruction. The Pacific territory has a history of tension between independence seekers and loyalists to France.

French Interior and Overseas Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Friday that a major police operation successfully reclaimed the Riviere-Salee district, the last area of Noumea under protesters' control. Darmanin shared on X (formerly Twitter) that 400 members of French and New Caledonian security forces, including elite anti-terrorism and anti-organized crime police units and military counterparts, were involved in the operation.

The unrest in New Caledonia highlights the ongoing conflict between those who advocate for independence and those who wish to remain part of France. The recent violence and subsequent police response underscore the volatility of the region's political landscape.
