Myanmar Declares Ceasefire for Earthquake Relief as Death Toll Rises

Myanmar’s military government has announced a temporary ceasefire until April 22 to facilitate relief efforts following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28. The disaster has resulted in over 3,000 deaths and more than 4,500 injuries, with widespread damage to buildings, infrastructure, and essential services.

Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, with both domestic and international teams working to provide assistance. In one instance, a 26-year-old man was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed hotel in Naypyidaw five days after the quake. However, challenges remain due to damaged roads, disrupted communication networks, and security concerns.

International aid has been pledged by several countries, including Australia, India, China, Russia, and the UAE. Relief agencies report an urgent need for food, water, and medical supplies, as hospitals in affected areas struggle to manage the influx of casualties.

The earthquake also impacted neighboring Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok collapsed, leading to casualties and an ongoing search for survivors.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, particularly in remote areas, as relief efforts progress.
