Sabotage Disrupts France’s TGV High-Speed Train Network

In a series of pre-dawn incidents, France’s TGV high-speed train network was targeted by saboteurs, resulting in significant travel disruptions. The attacks occurred just before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, revealing potential security vulnerabilities.

The coordinated sabotage coincided with France’s extensive security operation for the Olympics, involving tens of thousands of police and soldiers deployed to protect the capital, which has drawn security resources from across the country.

The state-owned railway operator reported that vandals damaged signal substations and cables on lines connecting Paris with Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg. An attempted attack on the Paris-Marseille line was thwarted.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Security sources indicated that the methods used suggested possible involvement of leftist militants or environmental activists, though no evidence has been found to support this.

The incidents contributed to a heightened sense of apprehension ahead of Friday evening’s Olympics opening ceremony in the heart of Paris. Additionally, operations at the Basel-Mulhouse airport on France’s border with Switzerland were briefly suspended due to a bomb alert.
