Security Forces End Hostage Situation at Russian Detention Center, Inmates Killed

Security forces in southern Russia intervened at a detention center on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of inmates linked to the Islamic State group who had taken two staff members hostage, according to reports from state-funded news channel RT.

Journalists on the scene reported hearing gunfire, and social media footage showed multiple ambulances arriving at the prison. The Federal Penitentiary Service stated that the hostages at the pretrial detention center in Rostov-on-Don were unharmed and that the hostage-takers had been "liquidated," without providing further details.

Local news outlets, including RT, reported that some prisoners were killed during the operation. Earlier, state news agency Tass, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, reported that six hostage-takers were armed with a penknife, a rubber baton, and a fire ax in the central courtyard of the Rostov region’s Detention Center No. 1. The prisoners were identified as individuals accused of links to the Islamic State group.
