SWAT Standoff in Hyrum: Suspect Fires on Deputies, Prompts Evacuations Over Bomb Threat

On June 29, 2025, a SWAT standoff unfolded in Hyrum, Utah, near 50 South 400 West by South Cache Middle School, beginning around 5 a.m. A 45-year-old man called 911, claiming he had killed his wife. When deputies from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office arrived, the suspect opened fire on them, prompting the deputies to take cover and call in the Sheriff’s SWAT team. The suspect reportedly fired again at the SWAT team, who returned fire. Armored vehicles from Logan, Brigham City, and Ogden Police Departments were deployed to establish a containment perimeter around the residence.

Negotiators made contact with the suspect, who sent photos of himself wearing a bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the home. Neighborhoods were evacuated, and the public was urged to avoid the area around 100 South 400 West and Main Street. A neighbor reported seeing an explosion inside the home, and doorbell footage captured sparks flying from the residence. By 11:25 a.m., Sheriff Chad Jensen announced the scene was “secure,” and the investigation was handed over to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team, with further inquiries directed to the Cache County Attorney’s Office. No officers were injured, and no additional details about the suspect’s status, arrests, or the wife’s condition were immediately released.
