West Bloomfield, Michigan — A man was found dead Thursday afternoon after what authorities described as a vehicle ramming and active shooter incident at Temple Israel, a large Reform Jewish synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, in the Detroit metropolitan area.
Police said the suspect drove a truck into the synagogue’s entrance at 5725 Walnut Lake Road, crashing through the front doors before opening fire inside or near the building. Security personnel on site returned fire, and law enforcement later discovered the suspect dead inside or near the vehicle, which caught fire during the confrontation.
Authorities reported no serious injuries to children or staff at the synagogue’s early‑childhood learning center, which was in session at the time. One security guard was struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries. Parents were directed to a nearby Jewish Community Center to reunite with their children as part of the evacuation.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and local police described the incident as an “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation,” with multiple agencies and the FBI responding. Investigators have not yet released a motive, though they are examining whether antisemitic intent was a factor.
