Clashes Erupt in Aleppo as Government Forces Battle Kurdish SDF; Ceasefire Declared Amid Heavy Displacement

Clashes in Aleppo between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-led SDF prompt ceasefire declaration amid ongoing tensions

Renewed fighting erupted in northern Aleppo starting January 6, 2026, between Syrian transitional government forces (led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa and associated with HTS) and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The clashes, centered in the Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, followed the collapse of talks to integrate SDF units into the national army.

Government forces advanced, taking control of much of Ashrafieh, while imposing curfews, ordering civilian evacuations, and declaring the areas closed military zones. Reports indicate at least 22 people killed (including civilians) and dozens injured since Tuesday, with over 140,000 residents fleeing the violence. Schools, government offices, and flights to Aleppo were suspended.

On January 9, the Syrian Defense Ministry announced a unilateral ceasefire in the affected neighborhoods, offering to evacuate remaining SDF fighters to northeastern Syria. However, SDF-affiliated Kurdish councils rejected the move, describing it as a demand for surrender, and vowed to resist. The fighting highlights challenges in unifying the country post-Assad, including minority distrust and stalled integration efforts. Humanitarian groups like UNICEF have reported damage to homes, infrastructure, and health facilities, exacerbating the crisis for local populations.
