The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), mounted on the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, has finished its planned five-year survey, generating the most comprehensive high-resolution 3D map of the universe yet by cataloging more than 47 million galaxies and quasars, alongside over 20 million stars in the Milky Way. Announced on April 14, 2026, the project surpassed its original goal of observing 34 million distant celestial objects, thanks to the instrument’s exceptional efficiency in capturing spectra every 20 minutes on clear nights using 5,000 fiber-optic “eyes”. This dataset, which spans distances up to 11 billion light-years, delivers six times more cosmological measurements than all previous surveys combined, offering new precision in mapping the universe’s large-scale structure.
Data collection began in May 2021, and the survey’s early success allowed completion ahead of schedule, with researchers now analyzing the full five-year results to probe dark energy—the enigmatic force accounting for roughly 70% of the universe and fueling its accelerating expansion—as well as dark matter and galaxy formation. Preliminary findings from the first three years of data, released in March 2025, suggested possible variations in dark energy over time, fueling anticipation for deeper insights. DESI Director Michael Levi of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory described the achievement as “spectacularly successful,” emphasizing its potential to reshape understandings of cosmic evolution.

Despite concluding its core mission, DESI will continue operations through 2028, expanding sky coverage by about 20% to include fainter galaxies, regions obscured by the Milky Way, and southern skies, with initial dark energy analyses from the complete dataset expected in 2027. Covering over a third of the sky with 20 times the 3D mapping precision of prior efforts, the map stands as a monumental step in cosmology.
